LAKE MILLS — The Lake Mills Bulldogs were looking to get back on track Friday night after losing to South Winneshiek last week.
Lake Mills welcomed Sumner-Fredericksburg to town in the final matchup of the regular season.
The Bulldogs got two early scores and scored points in each quarter on their way to a 26-12 win to finish the regular season 6-3 and 5-2 in district play.
“Our players did a great job this year,” said Bulldogs coach Bill Byrnes. “We capped off our last game with a win. We had enough offense and played some timely defense.”
The Bulldogs got a pair of 5-yard runs from running back Marcus Escherich and quarterback Cael Boehmer to go up 13-0 early in the second quarter.
Sumner-Fredericksburg answered with a touchdown, but still trailed, 13-6, at halftime.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third quarter when Slade Sifuentes caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Boehmer.
Sumner-Fredericksburg responded with a touchdown of its own to make it 19-12.
Lake Mills shut the door in the fourth quarter, thanks to its defense and a 29-yard touchdown run from Alex Albert.
After winning just one game a season ago, Lake Mills went to work this summer in order to improve on that mark.
“We made some big plays on both offense and defense,” Byrnes said. “Our coaches have done a great job with the kids this fall and the kids really put in a lot of time and effort during the summer and it carried through this fall. Our seniors will leave with their heads held high.”
