Man saved after sailboat capsizes

An Albert Lea man was reportedly saved Sunday by a kayaker after his sailboat capsized on Fountain Lake north of the hospital.

Kris Emil Springborg, 54, was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea to be treated for possible hypothermia. His condition is not known.

The man had reportedly been attempting to swim from his overturned sailboat in the middle of Fountain Lake to the shore, but had become exhausted, a press release stated.

Jackie Carstens, of Albert Lea, who was kayaking earlier in the day, reportedly heard the victim’s calls for help and paddled out to him.

According to Albert Lea police, he clung to her kayak while she paddled him to shore, where officers and paramedics were waiting at about 6:30 p.m.

He was wearing a floatation device, the press release stated.

Gold Cross Ambulance and Albert Lea Fire Rescue assisted on scene.
