MONTEVIDEO — The southwestern Minnesota city of Marshall will host the 2017 Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener.

The announcement was made Friday night during a community banquet at this year’s opener event, which is being hosted by Montevideo.

Gov. Mark Dayton noted that this will be the second time that Marshall has hosted the governor’s pheasant opener, which he initiated in 2011. Dayton pulled up on one pheasant Saturday but couldn’t shoot it because the bird was a hen, but Lt. Gov Tina Smith bagged her first pheasant.

Marshall was selected through an application process that considered hunting land in the area, facilities and community support. It lies near the 34,000-acre Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area. The city of 13,680 people is 150 miles southwest of the Twin Cities.

The season runs through Jan. 1. The daily bag limit is two roosters through November, increasing to three on Dec. 1, with a possession limit starting at six roosters and increasing to nine Dec. 1.
