Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary

Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary No. 552 started the new year with its meeting Sept. 17. The meeting took place at the Freeborn Legion hall. President Sandy Anderson called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and the auxiliary pledge were recited. Anderson gave the secretary report and it was approved as read. The treasurer report was given and approved. The community sewing group representative requested $100 for sewing needs. It was motioned and approved.

Thank you cards and notes that had been received were shared.

The poppy report from May was given under old business. The group decided on the poppy order for the coming year and they will be ordered by the treasurer.

Memberships were discussed. The group still has a few members who have not yet renewed. Anderson will notify them in the next newsletter. The group has added two new members this year.

Anderson has sent out new member invitation letters to see if we can recruit more new members.

Anderson announced that the new department president is Carol Kottom and the new first district president is Cindy Nelson. Anderson will be inviting them to our upcoming events.

There was a lot of new business. The date for community coffee time was set from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Nov. 19. The monthly meeting will follow at 10 a.m.

The Santa, hospice tree lighting, Christmas potluck and bingo party will be Dec. 4 at the Freeborn Legion hall. Santa will arrive at 3 p.m. and this is sponsored by the Freeborn American Legion. The auxiliary will serve coffee and cookies while Santa is there. At 4:30 p.m. the hospice tree lighting ceremony will take place with the reading of the names to be remembered.  The auxiliary pot luck will follow at approximately 5 p.m. and bingo will begin at approximately 6 p.m. The entire community is invited to these events and no one leaves bingo empty handed!

The date for the auxiliary annual soup and pie/dessert will be Feb. 18. It will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Legion Hall.

The group dispersed some of its funds from the poppy and general funds by donating to the department president’s project, to the $5 bill shower, to the ALA Hospital and to the Christmas gift shop. The group also donated to the first district president and junior auxiliary presidents’ projects.

The Freeborn Sons of the American Legion has a project called Avenue of Flags. It is collecting donations towards the project or you can donate $125 and purchase one of the flags and a donation name plaque will be placed with the flag. The auxiliary will be purchasing a flag.

With no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be Saturday.
