Tigers down Huskies on gridiron

50 years ago: 1966
• Lea College of Albert Lea, in its first year of playing football, raised its season record to 4-0-1 after defeating Pillsbury 19-16. Guard Rich Domino of the Lancers intercepted a pass and ran 40 yards for a touchdown.
• The Albert Lea High School football team defeated Owatonna 26-7. The Tigers were led by Doyle Freemyer, who rushed for 111 yards on 12 carries, and Tim Paske, who gained 97 yards on 17 carries.
• The ALHS boys’ cross country team tied with Washburn for 4th place in the Minnesota state tournament.
• The Alden High School football team defeated Kiester 33-7 to win the Border League title. Al Lindeman of the Blackhawks threw for 130 yards and rushed for 48 yards.
• Bob Harang scored on a 55-yard run for the Lake Mills High School football team in its 21-13 win over Forest City.
25 years ago: 1991
• The Lake Mills volleyball team shut out Northwood-Kensett 3-0 by scores of 15-4, 15-10 and 15-12 and raised its season record to 29-5. Darcy Kvale had 10 aces for the Bulldogs.
• Gene Larkin drove in the winning run in the 10th inning for the Minnesota Twins in their 1-0 victory and the 1991 World Series championship. Jack Morris of the Twins pitched a complete game.
• In Section 2B football playoffs United South Central defeated Maple River 16-14 for its seventh win of the season. Troy Boettcher rushed for 82 yards for USC.
• Mike Mattson completed 10 of 19 passes for 206 yards for Alden-Conger in its 20-14 football win over Goodhue.
10 years ago: 2006
• The ALHS volleyball team lost in the first round of Section 1AAA playoffs to Farmington 1-3 by scores of 18-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 30-28. Annika had 21 kills and 41 digs and Kat Ladwig had 39 assists and 26 digs for the Tigers. The Tigers finished the season with a 16-11 record.
• The LM volleyball team won its 4th straight District title with a 3-1 win over Okoboji. Caitlin Moore had 16 kills, Megan Pederson 14 kills and Courtney Kingland had 33 assists for the Bulldogs.
