A.L. basketball overcomes Fairmont

50 years ago: 1966

• In its opening game of the 1966-67 basketball season, Albert Lea High School defeated Fairmont 56-40. Leading the Tigers were Darrel Gavle with 18 points and Dan Doty with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

• Northwood-Kensett opened its basketball season with a 58-53 victory over Britt. Tom Nelson scored 18 points, Lynn Gunderson 14 and Oscar Fewins 12 for the Vikings.

• The ALHS wrestling team defeated White Bear Lake 36-11. Winning by pins for the Tigers were Gerald Bakke at 95 pounds, Howie Nelson at 103 pounds, Mark Hunt at 133 pounds, Chuck Jean at 175 pounds and Roger Klukow at heavyweight.

• The Freeborn High School basketball team defeated Ellendale 51-43 with John Miller scoring 20 points and Brian Schultz 18. Steve Wayne led Ellendale with 14 points.

• The Emmons Eagles basketball team defeated Lyle 66-62 behind 22 points by Gay Schewe and 21 points by Steve Andersland.

25 years ago: 1991

• In the first ever Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Football Team the All-Area Coach of the Year was Roger Goerish of United South Central. The All-Area Player of the Year was Scott Sommers of NRHEG.

Named as All-Area football players; from ALHS were Jeff VanBeek, Chris Shoff, Reid Olson and Steve VanMaldeghem; from Alden-Conger was Chris Sorenson; from Lake Mills were Marc Bartels, Ryan Charlson and Matt Nepstad; from NRHEG were Brian Johnson, David Bunn and Scott Sommers; from N-K were Brian Lease, Jayson Newman and Josh Dodd; and from USC were Troy Boettcher, Les Prange, Scott Berg, Brian Malm, Dan Schimek, Chris Jensen, Mark Ricke and Doug Sander.

10 years ago: 2006

• Named to the All-Area Football Team by high school are the following: from ALHS were Taylor Ignaszewski and R. J. Polley; from A-C were Ryan Wach and Ross Hemmingsen; from Glenville-Emmons were Jarrad Knutson and Aaron Wuerflein; from Lake Mills was Spenser Brackey; from NRHEG were Mitch Brekke, Justin Stieglbauer and Taylor Holland; and from N-K were Matt Hengesteg and Tyler Stading.
