A.L. volleyball sweeps Faribault

50 years ago: 1966

• In its initial season of playing football the Lea College Lancers improved their record to 5-1-1 after defeating Bethel 38-6. Jim Johnson scored four touchdowns for the Lancers.

• Head basketball coach of the Albert Lea High School team, Dick Nielson, greeted six returning letter winners at the start of practice for the 1966-67 season. The returning letter winners were John Vollum, Chuck Slette, Larry Louters, Darrel Gavle, Dan Doty and Hollis Grorud.

25 years ago: 1991

• The ALHS volleyball team opened play in the Section 1AA opening round with a 3-0 win over Faribault by scores of 15-3, 15-14 and 16-14. Laura Bisek had 12 kills and Donelle Jensen was a perfect 18-18 in serving for the Tigers. The Tigers season record improved to 15-6. The Tigers defeated Rochester Mayo 3-0 in the quarterfinal round. Bisek had 16 kills for Albert Lea. 

• Named to the Big Nine Conference All-Conference football team from ALHS were Reid Olson (linebacker), Chris Shoff (offensive line) and Jeff VanBeck (running back).

• Advancing to the Minnesota state girls’ swimming Tournament from ALHS were eighth-grader Christie Strecker in the 100-yard breaststroke and senior Amy Beese in diving.

• In sub-section 1 of Section 2A volleyball United South Central shut out Alden-Conger 3-0. Jane Passer had 18 kills for USC.

10 years ago: 2006

• Named to the 2006 Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Volleyball Team were the following: First Team — Annika Smed and Kat Ladwig from ALHS, Megan Pedersen and Caitlin Moore from Lake Mills and Ashley Lau from Glenville-Emmons. Named co-players of the year were Annika Smed and Megan Pedersen. Second team was Alysa Braaten from NRHEG, Haley Johnson from Alden-Conger, Shawnee Sovell from USC, Karissa Olson from G-E and Courtney Kingland from L.M. Third team was Kate Hartman from Northwood-Kensett, Chandra Hundley from ALHS, Caitlin Skjeie from L.M., Lindsey Dahl from USC and Cailin Timm from NRHEG.
