Kiah Halvorson and Okeyemi “Toby” Onireti were recently awarded the 2016 Garth Barker Memorial Scholarship, according to a press release.

Halvorson was a 2015 GBM scholarship recipient. She continues to pursue her degree in social work and alcohol and drug studies at Winona State University and is anticipating a 2017 graduation date.

Onireti is enrolled at Riverland Community College in Austin and plans to continue pursuing his degree in alcohol and drug studies.

The Garth Barker Memorial Scholarship Fund was established both to honor Garth Barker — who passed away in 2007 — and to assist students pursuing a career in chemical dependency counseling. Funds raised at the annual Bikes for Barker event support the fund.

The next event is scheduled for June 24. Barker was the director of Fountain Centers from 1990 to 2007.
