Duplicate Bridge Club

Duplicate Bridge Club played at six tables on Nov. 1 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Barb Engebretson and Orrin Roisen, first place; Gail Nelson and Sue Mann, second place; Gail and Ray Schmidt, third place; John Liesen and Rick Stroup, fourth place; Vandy Newman and Bud Higgins, fifth place; and Edna Knobbe and Kathy Liesen, sixth place.

Dave Ring and Orrin Roisen, first place; Eunice Michaelis and Warren Behrends, second place; Vandy Newman and Ron Peters, third place; and Larry Crowe and Jim Fisher, fourth place.

According to a press release, players come from Adams, Albert Lea, Austin and Rose Creek. Anyone who would like to play is welcome. Those who do not have partners can call 437-2750.

Duplicate Bridge is played at 12:30 on Tuesdays and noon on Wednesdays at the Senior Center in Austin.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 56 of Albert Lea met at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Legion dining room. President Bonnie Schneider opened the meeting with the usual opening ceremonies. Chaplain Kim Thomas gave the opening prayer. Secretary Ange Larson did the roll call of officers and gave the secretary’s report from the September meeting. The treasurer’s report was also given.

Initiation of new members took place. New members are Taylor Stone, Jo Hanson, Carol Olson, Ginger Friday and Sharon Olson. They each received a copy of the Constitution, a poppy, a flag and flag etiquette pamphlet, an American Legion Auxiliary pamphlet, “Who We Are, What We Do and Why it Matters to You,” and an American Legion Auxiliary pin.

Committee reports were given by children and youth, education and national security chairwomen.

The music chairwoman led the group in the national anthem, “Those Dear Folks” and “God Bless America.”

Recommendations were voted upon and approved as follows: Veteran Hospital Auxiliary Fund, hospice tree, Presbyterian Food Shelf, The Salvation Army food shelf, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and Legion kids Christmas party.

Announcements: The American Legion Auxiliary 97th birthday was Thursday and Veterans Day was Friday. American Education Week is from Monday to Friday. Thanksgiving is Nov. 24. Tom and Jerry’s will be served from 9 a.m. to noon and Thanksgiving dinner for veterans and their families will be served from 1 to 4 p.m. The children’s Christmas party will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The group’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 5. A memorial service will take place.

Lunch was served by Ange Larson. The quarter drawing was won by Lynn Koza.

The chaplain led the group in a closing prayer and the meeting was adjourned.
