The Albert Lea wrestling team continued to roll as it undefeated in a tournament Saturday at Park of Cottage Grove High School.
Albert Lea moved to 9-0 on the year with four more victories, with its closest match coming against No. 10 Hutchinson, which it won, 44-21.
“Our wrestlers faced some adversity in the match against (Hutchinson) and in some of our other matches,” Albert Lea coach Larry Goodnature said. “It was a good test for them, to see where we stand among some other good teams.”
Albert Lea seized control of the match when it strung together four victories in a row starting with Tyler Harms pinning Cale Luthens. Brody Nielsen followed with a 10-0 major decision win and Zach Glazier capped off the fourth win with another pin. Garrett Aldrich won by forfeit. Those four wins gave the Tigers 32-6 lead.
Tanner and Matt Palmer ended the match with back-to-back wins for the Tigers.
Albert Lea didn’t face a tough match the rest of the day, according to the scores.
It picked apart Blue Earth (57-10), Park of Cottage Grove (65-6) and Tartan, though no score was reported.
“The guys competed well this weekend,” Goodnature said. “I think we are right where we should be this early in the season.”
Albert Lea will take a break from team events this week, as it will take part in the Air Force Christmas tournament in Rochester. The individual tournament will be held in Rochester and starts Friday.
“It’ll be a good test for our guys,” Goodnature said. “They can see where they rank among wrestlers from the five-state area.”
Thirty-two teams from North and South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin will compete in the two-day tournament.
