A man who reportedly led Albert Lea officers on a high-speed chase and then escaped custody and fled to California pleaded guilty to two charges Thursday in Freeborn County District Court.

Levi Troy Dahl, 21, pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular operation and misdemeanor reckless driving in the chase that reportedly reached speeds of more than 60 mph.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 14. Dahl — who is expected to be in prison until June after using methamphetamine and failing to enter treatment as ordered by the court — is expected to be sentenced after he is sentenced on a separate file in Faribault County District Court.

He faces two counts of first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary and third-degree burglary and three counts of felony theft there in connection with the theft of tools, weapons and cash.

Court documents state Dahl was charged in the chase after an Albert Lea police officer was heading east on Fountain Street Sept. 6 while on patrol and noticed the driver of a Chevy Malibu who matched the description of a suspect in the Faribault County burglary.

Dahl reportedly did not stop the vehicle after an officer activated his emergency lights, and the chase accelerated when the Chevy turned south on Newton Avenue and drove through two stop signs on Newton without slowing down, court documents state.

The vehicle crossed the intersection of Newton Avenue and Main Street against a red light, and “swerved dramatically to avoid a collision with a van in the intersection,” court documents state.

The Chevy then reportedly collided with a vehicle parked facing north on the opposite side of the road, causing both vehicles to go over the curb, the sidewalk and into a municipal parking lot, causing front-end damage.

Dahl and the passenger in the chevy — Cheyenne Debra Goodhart — were injured in the crash. Two hypodermic needles, a butane torch and a tin containing two small plastic bags and four cotton swabs were found in Dahl’s vehicle, court documents state. One of the bags reportedly field tested for meth.

Dahl admitted to being on meth and leading officers on the chase Thursday.

Criminal vehicular operation carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Assistant Freeborn County Attorney Paige Starkey expects Dahl to receive a probationary sentence in the case.
