Always learning.
Learning is a journey that we all share — students, teachers, support staff, principals, parents and community members. Celebrating the small steps of everyday learning, to the milestones — such as graduation — creates joy and fuels us to continue on the lifelong path of learning.
At Hawthorne Elementary, some of our youngest learners are comparing different versions of “The Gingerbread Man” stories, happily engaging in literacy that entices their imaginations and teases their taste buds.
In another primary classroom, an observer might notice rich conversations around math concepts while children explore the meaning of the equal sign, find missing addends (2+3 = __ + 4), and build deep understanding of how math works through the use of manipulatives rather than rote memory.
Continuing down the hallway, students are developing basketball skills in physical education, and a mere 25 minutes later — learning to play the ukulele in music, or creating an original piece of artwork.
A look into a third-grade classroom reveals 20 authors preparing their first work of realistic fiction, complete with fictional characters, a problem and a solution that brings a satisfying closure to their writing pieces.
Up the flight of stairs, fourth- and fifth-graders take on the challenge of learning long division, applying the scientific method and researching Native Americans — culminating in a presentation where students apply speaking and listening skills.
In today’s education culture, teachers are active learners, as well. Technology goals like applying Google classroom, formative assessment tools such as kahoot and creating digital portfolios are supported by our building technology integration coach and colleagues who lend a helping hand. Some teachers engage in college coursework, while our professional learning communities work together to achieve building-wide goals. Teaching and learning is the work we love.
Always learning.
