The Lake Mills wrestling team did something over the weekend it hasn’t done since 2003 — win the Top of Iowa Conference tournament.

The Bulldogs totaled 244.5 points to run away with the 2017 title.

“Our kids showed up not only wanting to win the tournament, but to do it by a wide margin,” Bulldogs coach Alex Brandenburg said. “It is very exciting to watch our kids wrestle so hard for each other and have fun doing it.”

Five wrestlers from Lake Mills made to it to their respective finals, and three came away with championships.

Sophomore Caiden Jones beat Bryce Trees (North Butler) 9-8; Gabe Irons took down fifth-ranked Zach Ryg (Central Springs), 6-0; and Slade Sifuentes continued his impressive run that has spanned over a calendar year when he defeated Hunter Hagen (West Hancock), 13-6.

“Our three champions all showed great composure in the finals,” Brandenburg said. “They were able to wear down their opponents.”

Sifuentes was honored by receiving TIC West Wrestler of the Year. He passed Noah Irons as Lake Mills’ all-time pins leader.

Osage finished in second place with 162.5 points.
