Dean Flatness, 1953-2017

A gathering of family and friends for Dean L. Flatness, 63, of Albert Lea will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Malinsky will officiate.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery. Online condolences are welcome at www.bavyiewfuneral.com.
Dean died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Dean Lawrence Flatness was born Oct. 30, 1953, in Albert Lea, the son of Glenn and Arlene (Burkart) Flatness. He grew up and attended school in Albert Lea and Alden. Over the years, Dean worked at the Alden American Legion, Petro Pumper and Vet’s Whoa N’ Go. Dean loved watching football, both pro and college. One of his passions was the NFL Draft. He kept many journals with all of the draft picks for years. Dean also enjoyed fishing, especially with his nieces and nephews. Dean thought very highly of all the nursing staff at St. John’s Lutheran Community. They all made his time there special. Dean spent time volunteering with the candy cart while he was at St. John’s.
Dean is survived by his father, Glenn; brothers Allan (Julie), Kent (special friend, Alzada), Arden (Thea) and Lynn; sisters-in-law Margaret and Kim; nieces and nephews Allison, Erin, Valerie, Brianne, Jordan, April, Hollie, Jay, Brady, Crystal, Carolyn, Cory and Seri; many great-nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles.
Dean was preceded in death by his mother, Arlene; brothers Wayne and Jerry; and all of his grandparents.
