Duplicate Bridge Club

Five tables played during Duplicate Bridge Club on Jan. 10 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Gail and Ray Schmidt and Vandy Newman and Bud Higgins, tied for first place; Connie Johnson and Jaynard Johnson, second place; Larry Crowe and Ron Peters, third place; and Barb Engebretson and Orrin Roisen, fourth place.

Four tables played Duplicate Bridge on Jan. 11 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Loren Cleland and Bud Higgins, first place; Dave Ring and Orrin Roisen, second place; Vandy Newman and Ron Peters, third place; and Barb Engebretson and Lorraine Lippert, fourth place.

Duplicate Bridge plays at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and noon Wednesdays at the Senior Center in Austin. All are welcome to attend.

Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary

The Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary No. 552 met Jan. 7 at the American Legion in Freeborn.

President Sandy Anderson called the meeting to order. The pledges were recited and Anderson read a prayer. The secretary and treasurer’s reports were given and approved.

Anderson presented a bill from the potluck/bingo party. Lela Peterson presented a bill for a new coffee pot which will be used for the coffee shop. A motion was made and carried to pay the bills that were presented. Anderson gave a report on the how the Santa/hospice tree lighting/potluck/bingo party went. The Minnesota department president and her guest attended the event. The group was pleased they had an enjoyable time. She even mentioned it in her column in the Legionnaire newspaper.

The number of people attending was up a few from previous years, and it was reported that a good time was had by those who attended. All went home with many prizes. When the people were leaving, many said that they would be back next year.

It was announced the group still has one member that did not renew, but it did add a couple of new members this year.

The community sewing group met Jan. 11 at the American Legion in Freeborn. A dues notice for 2018 will be sent in by the treasurer. It was decided to have the dues remain the same as they were.

The details of the centennial cookbook were handed out to those interested in submitting a recipe or two. Anderson also read about where the gift shop purchased the items for veterans from. The details of the upcoming soup and pie/dessert fundraiser were reviewed. The date will be Feb. 18 at the American Legion in Freeborn. Posters have been put up in various businesses in the area. The group is looking for girls and boys in the 11th grade in the area to attend Girls’ State and Boys’ State.

With no other business the meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting will be at 9 a.m. Feb.18 at the American Legion in Freeborn.
