Sheriff Kurt Freitag said automobiles and pickups are not allowed on any lake or body of water in Freeborn County. ATVs are allowed, he said, but he advised riders to be careful and check ice thickness.

“Because of the recent warm temperatures, and even warmer temps forecasted in the coming days, ice thickness on our lakes is getting dangerously thin,” Freitag said. “Also, the quality of the ice to support weight has diminished significantly.”

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to approach 50 degrees today and warm to 59 degrees on Friday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 50s this weekend before reaching 60 degrees on Monday with a 60 percent chance of rain.
