Principal’s Corner by Mark Grossklaus

During this school year at Albert Lea High School, we have been talking with students about being Top 20 students.

One of the concepts we have talked about with students is being above the line versus below the line. What is the difference between being above the line versus below the line?

Being above the line means a person has a positive view on life and how we see the world. A person above the line would be hopefulness, have positive beliefs, a positive attitude, have an energetic mood and emotions, be optimistic and have the power to control of my life.

Being below the line means a person has a negative view on life and how we see the world. A person below the line would have a negative attitude, have negative beliefs, feel hopelessness, be in depressing moods, being a pessimist, feelings of sadness and anger and being a powerless victim of life.

Our goal for students and staff is to live above the line the majority of the time and only “visiting” below the line for a short amount of time.

You will hear students and especially staff say, “I am going to stay above the line.”

People realize they might visit below the line, but want to be above the line. It is much easier to live above the line.
