3 A.L. basketball players named to Big Nine team

50 years ago: 1967

• Named to the Border League All-Star Basketball Team by High School were the following; Alden – Al Lindeman, Ron Peterson and Mike Nelson; Bricelyn – Glen Oelerking and Arwin Flo; Delavan – Jerry Treptow; Elmore – John Kiester and Lee Norman; Emmons – Gaylen Schewe; Freeborn – John Miller; Frost – Jeff Loge; and Kiester – Ron Penning.

• The Hayfield High School basketball team defeated Northfield 68-59 to win the region title and a trip to the Minnesota state high school basketball tournament. Hayfield lost its first game at the state tournament 56-53 to Bemidji.

• Albert Lea High School’s Chuck Jean defeated Steve DeVries of Rochester John Marshall 6-1 to win the 165-pound weight class at the Minnesota state high school wrestling tournament.

25 years ago : 1992

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference basketball team from ALHS were Steve Brigger, Chris Boysen and Paul Kenis. Receiving honorable mention were Wade Hammer and Chris Shoff.

• In the first round of Section 1AA, the ALHS basketball team defeated Northfield 74-48. Steve Brigger of the Tigers scored 22 points. The Tigers lost their quarterfinal game to Rosemount 69-67. Brigger again led the Tigers scoring with 22 points and Chris Boysen added 20 points.

• ALHS graduate Julie Coughlin was named to the 1992 All-Northern Sun Conference women’s basketball team.

• Senior Dave Mendenhall of ALHS won the Minnesota state wrestling title in the 160 pound weight class. Senior Nate Skaar placed third at 135 pounds for the Tigers.

10 years ago: 2007

• The Northwood-Kensett boys’ basketball team won its first game at the Iowa state basketball tournament 54-51 over Boyden-Hull. Jordan Cotter and Josh Walker each scored 15 points for the Vikings. The Vikings won their semifinal game 55-49 over Lone Tree. Cody Hanson led  the Vikings with 22 points. N-K won its first Iowa state basketball title after defeating Iowa Mennonite  47-44. Dan Bestal led N-K with 16 points.

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference hockey team from ALHS were Mark Walton, Clay Casanova, Dustin Arendt and Adam Royce. Receiving honorable mention were Lucas Hanson, Jared Bowman, Casey Woodside and Ben Waalkens. ALHS hockey coach Ron Nystrom was named Section 1A Coach of the Year.
