Grace Niebuhr, 1936-2017

Grace Leeann Niebuhr, 80, of Wells died Saturday, April 15, 2017, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wells. The Rev. Mary Iverson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Grace Niebuhr

Grace was born July 24, 1936, in Foster Township in Faribault County, the daughter of George Harold and Alice (Beyer) Courrier. In 1952 the family moved to rural Wells, where Grace attended school. She remained in Wells the rest of her life. She graduated from Wells High School in 1953 and attended the College of Medical Technology in Minneapolis.

On Aug. 2, 1958, Grace was united in marriage to Benhardt Niebuhr at United Brethren Church in Wells. To this union two children were born, Brad and Ellie. Grace worked as a medical technician at local clinics for 42 years before retiring in 1998.

After her husband’s death in 1997, she moved to  Broadway Apartments in Wells. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Naeve Hospital Foundation. She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, church council member, in the women’s organization and past president of the congregation. She was also a member of the board of directors of Naeve Hospital.

Grace enjoyed her activities at the church, as well as reading, crossword puzzles, playing Bridge, traveling and watching “Jeopardy.” She loved spending time with her friends and family, especially her five grandchildren. She attended many of their events and activities over the years. Grace had a deep faith in the Lord, was an avid reader of the Bible and loved her church.

Grace is survived by her children Bradley (Kathleen) Niebuhr of Albert Lea and Ellen (Terry) Sveine of New Ulm; grandchildren Elizabeth (Andrew) Thomes, Chelsey (Mark) Zoller, Sarah Niebuhr, Steve (Sarah) Sveine and Sam (fiance, Tara) Sveine; in-laws Shirley (Newell) Courrier, Irene (Wenthold) Niebuhr and Ray (Charlene) Harris; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ben; siblings Madonna, and her husband, Orvin Tveit, and Edward Courrier; in-laws Richard Niebuhr and  Lavonne and her husband, George Lenort.
