Learning standards through weaving

Halverson Elementary School students Nick Martinez and Chase Schmidt stand with their in progress paper weaving. The next step is to use oil crayons to draw lines that will create a pattern on top of the weaving. The lesson was inspired by the book “The Spider Weaver: A legend of Kente Cloth” by Margaret Musgrove and Julia Cairns. Several third-grade standards will be covered in this lesson, including creating a weaving, identifying the characteristics of visual artworks from a variety of cultures, and using the elements of visual art including line, shape, color, texture and space. - Provided
