Albert Lea man sentenced to nearly 2 years in prison for threatening to kill woman

An Albert Lea man who allegedly threatened to kill a woman last year was sentenced to nearly two years in prison Monday in Freeborn County District Court.

Joseph Alan Roberts, 26, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to felony domestic assault in December. He received credit for 189 days served, and will serve his sentence at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud.

Court documents state Roberts was charged after an Albert Lea lieutenant and officer were dispatched June 29, 2016, to an address in Albert Lea on a report of an assault involving a knife.

The victim said Roberts threw her on the ground, holding her by her hair. She said Roberts held a 5-inch folding knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.

The victim, who was Roberts’ girlfriend for 11 months at the time of incident, reportedly sustained a small cut on her left wrist.

All four tires on the victim’s vehicle were reported flat with puncture holes in the side walls.

In a separate file, Roberts was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in prison for fifth-degree controlled substance possession. He was given credit for 109 days served.
