Juneteenth to be celebrated

United Methodist Church will celebrate Juneteenth at 6 p.m. June 19, according to a press release.

On Jan. 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves was signed. Two and 1/2 years later, Texas received the news. As a result, Texas slaves were freed on June 19, 1865, and the Juneteenth celebration was born.

The public is invited to enjoy barbecue ribs during a potluck dinner. Those who attend should bring a dish to pass.

The event will feature music and a presentation by John V. Smith of Albert Lea, who will speak on the meaning of Juneteenth.
