Notes from the sports desk

I wanted to write this column to introduce myself and let you get to know a little bit about me and my background.

To start, my name is Tyler Julson and aside from my time away at college, I have lived in Northwood for virtually my entire life.

Fresh out of college, I am currently living at home with my mom and stepdad and I am the oldest of my three siblings (two brothers and a sister).

I graduated from Northwood-Kensett in 2010 and without knowing what I wanted to do with my life I took some time to really think about it.

I have always loved sports. I played football, baseball and threw for the track and field team in high school. Knowing that I was nowhere near good enough to pursue a career playing sports, I wanted to find an area where I would still be involved in the world I loved. Sports journalism was where I landed.

I went on to get my associate’s degree from Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, and from there I decided to pursue an education in journalism at Iowa State University.

My decision to attend Iowa State was the best decision I have ever made. While at Iowa State I was able to work with some great people — both in the classroom and at the Iowa State Daily.

Working for the Daily, I got to cover a wide variety of sports. I started out covering womens’ golf, then moved to womens’ tennis and, finally, the womens’ basketball team. I also got the opportunity to do a little work with the womens’ gymnastics squad and the club wrestling team.

I started at the Tribune this summer as an intern to earn credit for a class at Iowa State. A few weeks into the internship, Jarrod Peterson announced he was leaving for Washington and I was offered the position a short while later.

I am incredibly grateful and thankful for the opportunity to cover sports for the Tribune. I am excited to get started and look forward to developing more relationships within the community.

I want to write stories about what you want to read. If you have any story ideas, questions or something you would like to suggest, please don’t hesitate to reach out. My email is tyler.julson@albertleatribune.com and my phone number is 507-379-3434.
