USC duo leads All-Area softball team

50 years ago: 1967

• In an Albert Lea slowpitch league game Trades & Labor defeated the Aragon bar 17-1. Trades was led by Bill Malepsy and Steve Appel with three hits each. In a second game the Melody Bar defeated COPI 8-6. Gary Koeder had three hits for the Melody Bar.

• Larry Peterson hit a grand slam for the Eagles in their 8-1 victory over Thorson in an Albert Lea softball league game. Ken Sibilrud was the winning pitcher.

• Alden defeated Glenville 7-1 in a State Line League amateur basebal game. Al Lindeman pitched the win.

25 years ago: 1992

• Named the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area softball Coach of the Year was Greg Ellsworth of United South Central. Named the Albert Lea All-Area softball Player of the Year was Angi Nowak of USC. Named to the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Softball Team were the following by high school: Alden-Conger — Jenna Dulas, Marci Newman, Theresa Trow and Lori Redman; USC — Kristin Maslakow, Bridget Linder, Angie Nowak and Julie Passer; NRHEG — Amy Berg and Jill Anderson; Glenville-Emmons   —Stacia Schroeder; Albert Lea High School — Kim Otterson.

• Jim Johnson was 4-4 and had three RBIs and Vern Frydenlund had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Albert Lea Colonels to an 11-1 win over New Richland. Al Johnson was the winning pitcher.

• The Albert Lea U-16 boys soccer team defeated Rosemount 3-1 for its first win of the season. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were James Mondeel (2) and Tom Smith. 

10 years ago: 2007

• Jordan Reindl hit a three-run homer for Northwood-Kensett in its 9-7 win over Rockwell in Iowa High School baseball.

• Brandon Klukow pitched a shut out for the Albert Lea Colonels in its 10-0 win against Wells.

• The Albert Lea VFW baseball team defeated Rochester 6-3 behind winning pitcher Colby Strilaeff. Jordan Cooper had two hits for A.L.
