The money will go toward vet costs, which include spaying and neutering and shots, food, shelter and supplies for the animals.

“We have a lot of animals in our community that are homeless, or their owners need to surrender them for one reason or another so we take them in,” said one volunteer, Robin Joel.

Friday was the seventh year for the organization to do the fundraiser. On average the volunteers raise $4,000 to 5,000. This year they had a goal of $10,000.

The people fundraising included volunteers and community members. Sheriff Kurt Freitag, District 27A Rep. Peggy Bennett, Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Randy Kehr and Blue Zones Project in Albert Lea organization lead Ellen Kehr also stopped by to support their efforts.

Aside from donations, Joel said volunteers are always welcome. Volunteering includes cleaning kennels and playing with the dogs and cats at the shelter.

To donate to the Freeborn County Humane Society you can go to their Facebook page, website or stop by the shelter during open hours.

The shelter is at 101 James Ave.
