High school welcomes new teacher and girls’ swim coach
Albert Lea High School’s new swim and dive coach aims to help his students in and out of the pool.
David Voller is not only the new swim and dive coach, but he is also the physical education developmental adapted physical education instructor at Albert Lea High School.
Voller is originally from Cambridge, where he grew up and graduated from Cambridge-Isanti High School in 2011. While in high school, Voller competed as a member of the swim team and earned three trips to the state meet.
After high school he moved on to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he swam as well as graduated with a degree in physical and health education. He was an assistant coach on the Wayzata boys’ swim team while he was a student teacher, and most recently was an assistant coach for the Cambridge-Isanti swim team.
In his first year at the high school, Voller is completely new to Albert Lea. Although he has heard great things about it, he said he has never been here until just recently. He talked about what made him want to come work here.
“Being from the north, you still hear about Albert Lea,” Voller said. “How great the school is, how great the team is, how much the community supports the school.
“What I’ve learned is when you have a community that really supports the school, the school is a lot nicer, it runs better, you get better students. So that was a big draw coming here, just knowing that this is a great school system.”
Voller took his first trip inside of Albert Lea just a week ago and was blown away with how beautiful of a city it was. He said he had heard it was gorgeous, but it was even more than he expected it to be.
Even though it has only been a week, he said he loves it here and his favorite part so far has been meeting all the wonderful people.
“The whole experience of coming down has been wonderful,” Voller said. “I’ve really been enjoying it so far. Everyone has been really nice, very friendly, very welcoming — there’s a lot of great people here.”
