The Albert Lea girls soccer team traveled to Fairmont Monday night in search of their second win of the season. Despite a strong goalie performance by sophomore Marissa Vogt, the Tigers were unable to overcome the Cardinals, falling 2-1.

The Tigers went into the halftime break trailing 1-0 and would give up another goal about halfway through the second half.

With around 10 minutes to play, senior Rachel Rehnelt hit the crossbar on a free kick from 30 yards out. Sophomore Ashley Butt was able to gain control of the rebound and send it into the back of the net, scoring the only goal for the Tigers.

Head coach Laura Wangen was proud of her team’s effort, especially the play of Vogt defending the net.

“Another solid effort from the team as a whole,” Wangen said. “Marissa Vogt had another game full of key saves in the net. As a young goalie, she is becoming stronger and gaining confidence each game. Despite losing four straight, the team continues to learn from each game.”

Albert Lea falls to 1-4 on the season and will be back in action tonight as they travel to Rochester John Marshall.
