Chuck Anderson: Albert Lea football won its season opener 50 years ago

Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1967

• Glenville High School started its football season with a 27-6 victory over Freeborn. Clark Cipra scored two touchdowns; Roy Bremseth and Bill Severtson scored one each for the Trojans. Bob Chicos scored for the Yeomen.

• Warren Peterson scored three touchdowns and gained 83 yards rushing for Bricelyn High School in its 24-0 football win over St. Clair. Also scoring for the Braves was Alan Prestegard.

• The Albert Lea High School football team defeated Jackson 26-7 in its first game of the season. Larry Brandt led the Tigers with three touchdowns. Dennis Larson also scored for the Tigers.

• Chuck Reindal rushed for 122 yards in 12 carries and Al Lindeman scored three touchdowns for the Alden High School football team in its 48-14 win over Ellendale.

25 years ago: 1992

• The new Lake Mills volleyball coach, Jim Boehmer, greeted eight returning letter winners to the start of practice. The returners were Rachel Hall, Becky Casyle, Rhonda Aanrud, Jamie Thompson, Karlo Olson, Darci Escherich, Krisanne Pederson and Caryn Reines.

• The Albert Lea High School volleyball team defeated Austin 3-0 by scores of 15-6, 15-8 and 15-9. Laura Bisek had 10 kills and Melonie Hill added eight kills and Angie Coughlin was 20 for 21 for the Tigers.

• The United South Central volleyball team shut out NRHEG 3-0 by scores of 15-3, 15-3 and 15-10. Kathy Ellsworth was 17 for 17 setting and Jane Passer had nine kills for USC.

• The Albert Lea High School football team lost its season opener 22-12 to Winona. Dusty Gonzales gained 83 yards on 16 carries.

10 years ago: 2007

• The Albert Lea High School girls’ tennis team defeated Mankato East 5-2. Winning singles matches for the Tigers were Dezeray Jacobs at No. 1, Hali Hendrickson at No. 2, Kelli Hanson at No. 3 and Taylor Nelson at No. 4. The Tigers No. 1 doubles team of Alarie Maras and Sarah Wenum were also winners.

• At the Albert Lea invitational soccer tournament, Albert Lea defeated Plum Creek 6-1 in the first round and Andover 2-0 in the championship game. Filipe Ambriz scored two goals, and Jared Jensen, Richard Needham, Oscar Hernandez and Adam Clark had one goal each in the first round game. Oscar Hernandez scored both goals in the title game.
