Albert Lea man involved in fatal crash

An Albert Lea man was involved in a fatal crash Sunday morning on Interstate 35 in southern Iowa.

Bernard Wayne Zelinsky, 90, of Carlisle, Iowa, was killed in the crash.

Zelinsky’s vehicle, a 2015 Dodge truck, was reportedly parked facing south almost completely in the right lane of Interstate 35, while he stood outside of the vehicle, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Richard Eugene Brooks, 53, of Albert Lea was driving a 2015 Peterbuilt semi south in the right lane when he attempted to swerve left to miss the parked car, striking Zelinsky and the Dodge truck at about 4:20 a.m. in Decatur County. The semi reportedly continued into the median, flipping on its driver’s side.

Brooks was not listed as injured on the report.

Clarke and Decatur County first responders were on scene.
