An Albert Lea woman who reportedly physically abused a girl she knew last October was placed on unsupervised monitoring for one year on Thursday in Freeborn County District Court.

Mary Elizabeth Mickelson, 33, will have her gross misdemeanor malicious punishment of a child charge dismissed if she abides by the conditions set by Judge Ross Leuning. She was ordered to attend a parenting class, counseling, not drink alcohol or use controlled substances, not to enter a bar or liquor store and submit to random testing.

Court documents state Mickelson was charged after a Freeborn County Department of Human Services worker responded to a report of possible child abuse on or about Nov. 2, 2016. Mickelson reportedly spanked the teenage girl with a soup ladle on Oct. 31, 2016.
