Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1967

• The Albert Lea High School boys’ cross country team was at the Minnesota state cross country meet. Team members were Shannon McCool, Russ Dahlke, Tim Peterson, Jim Parry, Dave Vande Brake, Lyth Hartz, Brendan O’Brien, Mark Kujawa and Milt Lund.

• The ALHS football team defeated Owatonna 34-0 and won the Big Nine Conference title with an undefeated record of 7-0. Scoring for the Tigers were Eric Oslund (2), Chuck Sherman, Gregg Sainsbury and Larry Weiler.

• Quarterback John Miller threw three touchdown passes for the Freeborn High School football team in its 32-7 victory over Frost.

• The Kiester High School football team, behind three touchdowns from Blaine Meyer, defeated Bricelyn 27-12.

25 years ago: 1992

• The Glenville-Emmons High School football team won its first game of the year when it defeated Medford 14-6. Kelly Ellingson passed to Jeremy Nelson for a 44-yard touchdown and Chad Mickelson ran for a one-yard touchdown for the Wolverines.

• Traci Bergo, a 1982 graduate of ALHS, was named to the University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire Hall of Fame. She was a member of the National Championship 800-yard freestyle relay team and also held school records in the 100 and 200 backstroke. She earned All-American Honors four times in her college career.

• In a quarterfinal football game, NRHEG defeated Hayfield 22-21. Terry Truebenbach scored three touchdowns and Neil Bentley scored one for the Panthers.

10 years ago: 2007

• Ken’s Service finished in first place in the Clarks Grove Mens Golf League. Team members were Ken Keesling, Jerry Bibus, Bob Hanson, Gary Matties, Steve Kezler, Keith Porter, Jr. and Kim Porter.

• The ALHS football team defeated Austin 28-12. Ben Waalkes scored two touchdowns, Logan Kortan and Louie Grossman had one each for the Tigers. Grossman gained 152 yards rushing.

• The ALHS girls’ soccer team defeated Mankato East and advanced to the Minnesota state girls’ soccer tournament. Scoring for the Tigers were Maria Maras, Chelsea LeBrun, Britti Lair, Jenna Christensen and Conner Peterson.

• Jake Brekken and Steve Hengesteg each scored three touchdowns for the Lake Mills football team in its 46-6 win against Rockford.
