Due to donations from Hy-Vee’s customers and employees, the American Red Cross’s Iowa region was presented with its largest check of the year, according to a press release.

Hy-Vee Inc. presented a $631,922 check to the American Red Cross after the company’s month-long fundraising effort to support victims of recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and beyond. The total donation includes a $100,000 company match from Hy-Vee.

During September, Hy-Vee customers were able to make donations during checkout at any of Hy-Vee’s 245 stores, as well as online or via Hy-Vee’s Aisles Online application when placing an online order.

“Our customers have a history of donating to those in need, and we’re proud to partner with them to offer help to those impacted by the recent hurricanes,” said Randy Edeker, chairman, CEO and president of Hy-Vee.

In addition, Hy-Vee partnered with community members to collect non-perishable goods at a recent Iowa State University football game and a University of Iowa football game. Donated items included toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags and diapers.

Hy-Vee also donated and delivered five semi-trailers of bottled water to victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, totaling more than 185,000 bottles of water.

“The outpouring of support that we saw from Hy-Vee and their customers during a time of unprecedented weather events is unmatched,” said Leslie Schaffer, regional executive of the Iowa region of the American Red Cross. “These donations help those hardest hit by the recent hurricanes as they work to rebuild.”
