Jay Dunbar, 1941-2017

Jay Allen Dunbar, 75, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at his home.

Jay was born on Nov. 10, 1941, to Gordon and Dorothy (Johnson) Dunbar in Albert Lea. He grew up on a farm near Alden, where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1959.

On Aug. 5, 1961, Jay married his high school sweetheart, Alvina “Dolly” Lindeman. In 1962, their son, Thomas Jay, was born.

The couple lived in Albert Lea, and in April 1963 Jay started the manager/trainee program with F.W. Woolworth Co., working in four different stores — starting with Albert Lea, Rochester, St. Paul and Ashland, Wisconsin. He then was appointed to manager in his first store in Cedar Falls, Iowa. From there he proceeded to Fort Dodge, Iowa, Virginia, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and at Westridge Mall in Fergus Falls until the store closed in 1994.  Jay then accepted the job of mall manager, as well as Oak Park Mall in Austin. He also worked for M.H. Geoff & Associates Inc. until he retired Sept. 1, 2017.

Jay loved being with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, hunting and camping. Jay was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. He was a member of the Elks Club and a rotary member for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife, Dolly, of Fergus Falls; son, Thomas J. Dunbar of Virginia Beach, Virginia; granddaughter, Emily Zettle of Virginia Beach; sister, Sandy (Bruce) Remington of St. Louis Park; brother, Michael (Janice) Dunbar of Dawsonville, Georgia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert (Loleen) Lindeman of Albert Lea and Allen (Carla) Lindeman of Conger; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and one hour prior to the service at the church. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. The Rev. Martha Hails will officiate. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rice Lake Cemetery in Foster Township. A public graveside service will take place.
