Unlike other parts of the state and the country, Albert Lea didn’t have any elections this go-around. In case you were disappointed, don’t worry, there will be plenty to make up for it next year.

Though it’s easy to wait until the last month before the election to learn about the candidates, we encourage you to pay attention to the articles and forums throughout the campaign season to learn about them — who they are and what they stand for. Make sure your source for this information is a trusted one, as many things out there on the internet do not always showcase the truth.

Already, several people have declared their intent to run for office.

There is the contentious race for Minnesota governor, which has garnered a lot of attention statewide. Also on the ballot will be several state legislative races and several local races, including from the Albert Lea City Council, Freeborn County Board of Commissioners and the Freeborn County sheriff’s race, to name a few.

Most of the candidates for local races have not yet declared their plans for office, and we encourage people who want to get involved and make a difference in their community to consider running for the open seats.

Though being in elected office is a huge commitment, it is likely a fulfilling job, too.
