Hit the ice

Now that the temperatures are staying low, Albert Lea’s outdoor skating rinks are in business. From 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, the Hayek rink and warming house are open for outdoor and indoor fun. Academy, Hawthorne and Lakeview rinks are also open Saturday and Sunday at the same times.

“Hansel and Gretel”

“Hansel and Gretel” is back live in high definition from the Metropolitan Opera on Sunday for an encore production at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. The story is based on a Brothers Grimm work and follows two siblings who get lost in the woods and captured by a witch, who plans to eat them.

The opera will be sung in English and begins at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Free matinee

For those who would like to keep small hands out of the leftover Christmas cookies for two hours, there’s a short road trip on tap. The Wells Flame Theatre is offering free matinee showings during Christmas break. At 2 p.m. Friday, the theater is showing “Cars 3.”

Bingo night

If the numbers are right, it could be your night. On New Year’s Eve, the Union Center is hosting a bingo night with a total payout that reaches $2,000. Early bingo begins at 6 p.m. Sunday.

New Year’s Eve dinner

The American Legion is hosting a dinner open to everyone from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. They will be serving New York strip and shrimp accompanied by a baked potato and salad bar choices.
