Letter: Oncology department still has a heart

As I sit here trying to put the words together, let me say that I, too, would like to see a full-service hospital in Albert Lea. But personally, I find that the people of Mayo Clinic still have a heart.
Even though I have not had surgery lately, nor will I ever have to worry about driving 23 miles to deliver a baby, circumstances are different for everyone. I understand that.
My situation is cancer. The entire staff at the Albert Lea Cancer Center oncology department made my recent cancer treatments fun. While no cancer is fun, they made it tolerable. Knowing that your life is in their hands, I have to say a great big thank you. The entire department always had a bright smile and a shining face even when I would tease them while having my treatments. They made it easier for me to be there. I’m sure that on my last day of treatment they, too, were glad to see me go — no more teasing from me! I know that I left with mixed emotions. The time, the knowledge, the care and the compassion they showed me proved that they still think of the patients first.
As I say, I hope for a full-service hospital, too. Maybe not all of Mayo sees things the same way, but for me, oncology of Mayo Clinic Cancer Center of Albert Lea has a heart. A great big heart. Thank you again to each and every one of you. I will forever be indebted to you — hopefully for a long time.
