A porch at a Glenville-area home was damaged Monday in a fire that was reportedly caused by a discarded cigarette.

Glenville firefighters were dispatched after 8:30 p.m. Monday to the fire at 14048 795th Ave. Upon arriving, they found the homeowners attempting to extinguish the fire on a three-season porch by using two fire extinguishers, said Glenville Fire Chief Matt Webb.

The fire was later extinguished, and Glenville firefighters were on scene for about two hours to ensure it did not extend into the house.

Property damage from the fire is estimated at $15,000, with an additional $3,000 in damage to contents on or near the porch.

Online property records list Blaine Nelson as the primary taxpayer of the property.

The Glenville Fire Department initially requested assistance from Hayward firefighters, but that was cancelled because the fire became more in control.
