Lake Mills attended the Doug Trees Invitational hosted by North Butler on Saturday and captured the title by a wide margin. The Bulldogs amassed 205.5 points, easily ahead of No. 9 ranked Wapsie Valley’s second place 150-point effort.
“Like most days there were some highs and lows,” said Coach Alex Brandenburg, “But overall, I feel we wrestled well.”
The championship team performance was fueled by several great individual performances, which included eight finalists.
The champions were seniors Alex Martinson at 126 pounds and Gabe Irons at 195 pounds and junior Kyle Beery at 138 pounds.
No. 5 Irons ended No. 2 Hunter Hagen of West Hancock’s undefeated season by a score of 4-1.
Martinson won his first career tournament despite being the fourth seed, and Beery pinned his way through the tournament.
Five other wrestlers also made the finals: Jack Ramaker, Caiden Jones, Tyler Helgeson, Drae Love and Max Johnson.
“Eight of our 12 wrestlers made the finals,” Brandenburg said, “It’s hard to complain about that performance.”
Despite battling some illness and injuries, Lake Mills has used depth throughout its roster to continue winning meets the past couple weeks. The team will now have a busy week which includes quadrangulars Tuesday and Thursday and the TIC Tournament Saturday.
