50 years ago: 1968

• Lu Matths won the 1968 singles title in the Albert Lea Women’s Bowling Association city bowling tournament. Irene Myre and Marian Ball won the doubles title and the handicap all events was won by Marcella Minear. The Class A team title was won by the Walnut Room. Team members were Marion Houge, Marion Thompson, Shirley Hatleli, Norma Bue and Bette Henrichs. The Class B team title was won by the Walgren Drug team of Dorothy Scott, Kacky Nelson, Cathy Legried, Diane Thompson and Marie Carlin.

• The Albert Lea High School basketball team, led by Harold Schumacher with 17 points and Jay Gustafson with 16, defeated Blue Earth 52-49.

• The Alden High School basketball team defeated Emmons 75-70. Ron Peterson scored 24 points and Al Lindemann 13 for the Blackhawks, and the Emmons Eagles were led by Ed Underwood with 24 points.

25 years ago: 1993

• The Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team improved its season record to 12-4 and its Gopher Conference mark to 7-2 after defeating Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 65-52. The Wolverines were led by John VanBeek with 27 points and 12 rebounds and Lane Vanek with 14 points.

•The ALHS boys’ hockey team defeated Mankato West, 5-2. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Cazzie Wacholz, Mark Willmert,Jeremy Hendrickson, Kris Ellsworth and Matt Hershey.

• In a North Iowa Conference boys’ basketball game, Northwood-Kensett defeated Garner-Hayfield 49-41. Gerd Dents scored 19 points and Jayson Newman 10 for the Vikings.

10 years ago: 2008

• The ALHS girls’ basketball team defeated Faribault, 59-51. Abbey Arends scored 15 points and Hali Hendrickson scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds for the Tigers.

• In the section-opening wrestling meet, ALHS defeated Rochester Century 63-10. Winning matches by pins for the Tigers were Cody Hansen at 112 pounds, Kyje Kriewall at 119 pounds, Conner Kortan at 135 pounds, Logan Kortan at 140 pounds, Matt Tiegs at 160 pounds and Ethan Reed at 215 pounds.

• Results in the Albert Lea Pool Tournament men’s gold division were first place, Bob Garza; second place, Charlie Garza; and third place, Jon Munson; and in the women’s division were first place, Deb Yttervold; second place, Noemi Herrera and third place, Missy Lowy.
