A Minnesota man died after he rear-ended another snowmobile on Saturday morning near Washburn.

The Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office reported John Rathai of Medford died after he was severely injured when his snowmobile rear-ended a snowmobile stopped on Pajala Road, about 5 miles west of Washburn, shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday.

Rathai was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, where he died, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident. The Washburn Police Department, Washburn Area Ambulance and the Ashland Fire Department also responded to the incident.

Rathai was a graduate of NHREG High School.
