50 years ago: 1968

• The Albert Lea High School baseball team defeated Austin 7-0 on a no-hitter thrown by Ron Erickson, Steve Rugroun and Larry Brandt. Third baseman Lynn Hebel led the Tiger offense with two hits and four RBI’s.

• Ron Peterson singled in the bottom of the ninth inning and drove in the winning run for the Alden Blackhawks in their 2-1 baseball win over Freeborn.

• In a triangular track and field meet in Austin, the home team won with 85 points to second place ALHS with 61 points and third place Owatonna with 19 1/2 points. First place finishers for the Tigers were Bob Veldman in the shotput, Chuck Sherman in the discus and Chuck Pappas in the long jump.

• The Minnesota Twins started their 1968 season with a record of 6-0 after defeating the Washington Senators 13-1. Winning pitcher Jim Merritt, Cesar Tovar and Ron Clark each had three RBI’s.

25 years ago: 1993

• Named to the 1992/93 All-Big Nine Conference hockey team from ALHS were Brandon Thomas and Mark Willmert. Receiving honorable mention were Tim Hanson, Reid Olson and Kris Ellsworth.

• The ALHS baseball team opened its season with a 3-2 victory over Waseca. Jay Kammerer was the winning pitcher and Mac Noland had two hits for the Tigers.

• United South Central defeated NRHEG 221 – 288 in girls’ golf. Scores for USC were Melanie Lepp 45 (medalist), Misty Nelson 55, Pepper Hagen 57, Maren Sand 64, Jennifer Miller 69 and Betsy Lorenz 69. The Panthers were led by Linsey Supalla 52.

• Dawn Bangs threw a no-hitter for the Glenville-Emmons softball team in its season opening 26-1 win over Faribault-Bethlehem Academy. Renae Follmuth had two hits and drove in three runs for the Wolverines.

10 years ago: 2008

• The Darkside team won the fourth annual Albert Lea Parks and Recreation volleyball tournament. Team members were Kurt Wallace, Tim Engebretson, Steve Tufte, Brandon Munson, Kevin Dulitz and Tim Stapleton.The co-ed tournament was won by the Green Mill team. Team members were Lisa Amundson, Lauren Nelson, Dana Nelson, Brandon Munson, Josh Ladwig and Mike Diemer.
