Freeborn County and much of the surrounding area are under a heat advisory from 1 to 8 p.m. today.

Heat index values will reach 95 to 100 degrees this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Light southerly winds of 5 to 15 mph will provide little relief.

The high temperatures and high humidity can contribute to possible heat illnesses for people active outdoors and those susceptible to heat illnesses, such as children and the elderly.

The weather agency advises people to take extra precautions when working or spending time outside.

People should reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

If taking part in outdoor work, people should take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
