50 years ago: 1968

• Lea College of Albert Lea defeated Emmetsburg Junior College, 11-8. Mike Oats picked up the win for Lea College and Tom Hanratty hit a homerun and a triple.

• In Border League baseball, Alden defeated Kiester 3-2 and Freeborn shut out Emmons 5-0, and both teams remained tied for first place with 7-1 records. Winning pitcher for Alden was Al Lindeman. Bob Chicos threw a one-hitter for the Yeomen.

• In city slow pitch softball, the Cabin Bar defeated COPI 15-3 behind a grand slam by Roger Butenhuff and a homerun by Eldon Picha. In a second game the Melody Bar defeated First Federal, 15-12. Melody was led by Steve Rheamue with two home runs and Larry Bondhus with four hits. Sharon Kazemba had four hits for First Federal.

25 years ago: 1993

• The Albert Lea High School boys’ tennis team won over Mankato, 5-2. Winners for the Tigers were in singles were Dean Hanson at No. 1, Nate Bibus at No. 2 and Rick Nyegaard at No. 3. Winners in doubles were Eric Johnson and Jake Veldman at No. 1 and Mike Hench and Josh Prantner at No. 2.

• Glenville-Emmons defeated Alden-Conger 9-5 in a Gopher Conference baseball game. Winning pitcher Doug Monson had 12 strikeouts and Brady Boyd and Scott Davis each had two RBI’s for the Wolverines.

• The undefeated ALHS boys’ golf team defeated Austin Pacelli 317-323 and Austin 317-328. Sores for the Tigers were Chris Baas (76), Phil Schmidt (80), Matt Stay (80), Chris Boysen (81) and Brendon Danielson.

• Dawn Bangs threw a three-hitter for the winning G-E softball team in its 8-6 victory over Bethlehem Academy.

10 years ago: 2008

• The United South Central baseball team improved to a 7-3 record in the Gopher Conference after defeating Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, 14-2. Matt Steirnnagle was the winning pitcher for the Rebels and Kevin George had three hits and drove in six runs. 

• The ALHS baseball team defeated NRHEG, 12-3. Colby Strilreff was the winning pitcher and Matt Hockinson and Logan Kortan each had three RBI’s.

• G-E defeated Mabel-Canton 5-1 with Tasha Belshan the winning pitcher. Randine Davis tripled for the Wolverines.
