Three Girl Scouts from Albert Lea Troop 43224 were recognized Monday for earning their Silver Awards. The Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award Ceremony was June 10 at the Holiday Inn in Owatonna. The Girl Scout Silver Award is earned by Girl Scout Cadettes and symbolizes their individual accomplishments in Girl Scouting and community activities. As part of the Silver Award project, each girl must plan and implement a sustainable project, involve the community and spend 50 hours of service time.

For their Silver Award project, Sophia Christensen and Marissa Hanson partnered up to collect shoes for the Good in the Hood organization’s Shoes Away Hunger program. They collected 824 pairs of shoes, which they delivered to Good in the Hood. These shoes will be sold or recycled to purchase food for people in need. These girls chose this project because of the multiple benefits: less waste, affordable shoes and food for people in need.

For her Silver Award project, Samantha Brumbaugh donated blankets to the birthing center in Albert Lea. The blankets were given to new mothers for their newborns. As part of her project, Brumbaugh solicited donations of material and thread, recruited volunteers to sew and sewed many blankets herself. With the assistance of community members, Brumbaugh donated 150 blankets.
