Alden-Conger, USC each sending 1 to state golf tournament

Two area golfers punched their tickets to the Minnesota state golf meet at the Section 2A tournament Monday morning.

For the second consecutive year, United South Central senior Morgan Pyzick was able to qualify for the state meet. Pyzick finished with a score of 203, which landed her in sixth place. She was the only Rebel to qualify for the section tournament.

The other golfer to earn a spot at the state tournament is Alden-Conger sophomore Annika Reibe, who qualified with a score of 207, tying her for eighth place in the section tournament.

The rest of the Knights also competed at the section tournament, as they were still in the running for a team title. The Knights would finish fourth as a team, behind the teams of Madelia, Cedar Mountain and Springfield.

Senior Sydney Chicos carded a score of 219, tying her for 13th place; and junior Autumn Soost finished in 23rd place with a score of 243.

The winning individual score for the girls’ tournament was 168, carded by Springfield senior Makenna Winkelmann.

Although neither of the boys’ teams qualified for the second round as a unit, United South Central was able to send four individuals to the second round.

Sophomores Andrew Heggen and Carson Wegner, junior Nolan Magnuson and senior Aaron Schaper all made the cut after the first round of the tournament on Thursday.

Magnuson led the charge for the Rebels, finishing in 20th place with a score of 180. Heggen came in 23rd with a score of 185; Schaper finished 24th with a score of 187 and Wegner came in 26th with a score of 189.

The winning score for the boys’ tournament was 150, turned in by Minnesota Valley Lutheran senior Sam Pfingsten.
