Minnesota women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Whalen announced the addition of 6-2 post player Barbora Tomancova to the team’s 2018 recruiting class Thursday.

A native of Brno, Czech Republic, Tomancova is the first player from the country to suit up for the Gophers. She currently attends school at SGLD Brno, and has played domestically for Zabiny Brno in the Czech Republic’s ZBL.

“Barbora is someone who, as a staff, we have been watching for some time now,” Whalen said. “Her versatility, length and skill for a post player are qualities we know will help our program. We are thrilled to have Barbora as a Golden Gopher.”

Tomancova has also competed on the international level for her home country. She averaged 4.9 points and 3.6 rebounds, highlighted by 16 points against Bosnia and Herzegovina and 10 points versus Sweden, to help the Czech Republic to a fourth place finish at the 2017 FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship. At the 2016 FIBA U17 Women’s World Championship her team came in fifth, after winning the 2015 U16 European Championship the previous year.

With her addition, Tomancova joins fellow signees Delaynie Byrne (Arvada, Colo.), Houlfat “Happy” Mahouchiza (Marseille, France) and Mercedes Staples (Centerville, Utah) in being eligible to compete starting in the 2018-19 season.
