50 years ago: 1968

• Glenville defeated Hayward 9-7 in State Line League amateur baseball. Herb Houg had four hits and Donn Drommerhausen added three hits for Glenville. Hayward was led by Wayne Walcholz with three hits.

• Ron Erickson threw a four-hitter for the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team in its 5-2 victory over Mason City. Donn Drommerhausen hit a two run homer for Albert Lea.

• In an Albert Lea slowpitch league softball game, the Moose defeated COPI-KWIK, 9-3. Lee Linde homered twice for the Moose.

• Home Lumber defeated Piggly-Wiggly 6-4 in an Albert Lea women’s fast pitch game. Alice Petersen hit a home run for Home Lumber.

25 years ago: 1993

• The Albert Lea American Legion defeated New Richland, 7-0. Winning pitcher Tom Drasher threw a five hit shut out and had four hits in four at bats and drove in three runs. Mike Piechoski and Trent Struck each had three hits for New Richland.

• The Albert Lea Trades and Labor 12 and under traveling baseball team defeated the Northfield Maroon, 15-3. Tony Bennett had two hits and two RBI’s for Albert Lea.

• Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins received the Most Valuable Player Award after hitting a homerun and a double for the American League in its 9-3 win over the National League in the All-Star game. The American League had now run six games in a row.

• Ryan O’Conner hit an eighth inning triple and drove in three runs, including the winning run, for the Albert Lea Eagles 15 year old traveling baseball team in its 8-7 win over Faribault.

10 years ago: 2008

• The Albert Lea under 15 boys’ soccer team received an automatic berth to the Minnesota State Tournament after defeating Northfield, 3-0. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Chad Meier (2) and Julio Ambriz.

• The United South Central Post 210 baseball team ended the regular season with a 6-4 victory over St. James. Kevin George was the winning pitcher and Alex Dreyer had two hits and two RBI’s for USC.

• Sean Gilliam was named the new Albert Lea High School girls’ basketball coach.
