Mavis Bartsch, 1931-2018

Memorial services for Mavis A. Bartsch of Geneva will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Community Lutheran Church in Geneva. The Rev. Dr. Kristen Venne will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, and one hour before services at the church. Interment will be in Geneva Cemetery.

Mavis died on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea. She was 86.

She was born on Oct. 25, 1931, on the family farm in rural Emmons, the daughter of Knut and Clara (Juveland) Hovland.

Mavis graduated from Emmons High School and then attended beauty school. She married Donald L. Bartsch on June 15, 1952, at Lime Creek Synod Church in rural Emmons. Mavis owned and operated Mae’s Beauty Shop in Geneva for more than 30 years before retiring.

She was an active member of Geneva Community Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking, baking, family gatherings and spending time on Leech Lake.

Mavis will be greatly missed by her family, including daughter, Jan, of Geneva; son, Greg, of Geneva; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Gilmore Nelson of Ellendale, Dorothy Towne of Emmons, Harold (Bernice) Bartsch of Owatonna, Jean Ahlstrom of Geneva, Mary (Paul) Groth of Ellendale and Darlene Bartsch of Owatonna; special “adopted” grandchildren Dylan and Brynna Ingvaldson; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Knut and Clara Hovland; her husband, Donald; brother, Ervin Hovland; sister, Clarine “Kay” Nelson; father-in-law and mother-in-law Lawrence and Magdaline Bartsch; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Margaret Bartsch, Clifford Bartsch, Ray Ahlstrom and Earl Towne; and nephew, Michael Bartsch.
