6 Gophers invited to USA Festival

Six members of the 2018-19 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team are among the 75 players who have been invited to the 2018 USA Hockey Women’s National Festival, which started Monday and runs through Aug. 13 at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York.

Gophers Taylor Heise, Patti Marshall, Gracie Ostertag, Kelly Pannek, Taylor Wente and Grace Zumwinkle head to New York with USA Hockey, looking for a spot on the select team set to face Canada in a three-game series following the national festival.

Pannek is one of five members of the gold medal-winning 2018 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team invited to the event, while Heise and Ostertag are two of 14 members of the U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team who won gold at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship on the roster. Eighteen different states are represented among the 75 athletes. The roster includes 42 forwards, 26 defense and seven goaltenders.

All practices and scrimmages associated with the 2018 USA Hockey Women’s National Festival in Lake Placid will be open to the public.

The annual event will be used to select the rosters for the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team and the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team for two three-game series against Canada to be held simultaneously Aug. 16-19 in Calgary, Alberta. The final rosters for both teams are expected to be announced Sunday. Minnesota associate head coach Joel Johnson will serve as head coach of the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team for the Canada series.

In addition to the Gophers’ six USA representatives, Olivia Knowles, Amy Potomak and Sarah Potomak are among the 41 athletes set to attend Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Friday through Saturday to kick off the 2018-19 Hockey Canada season.

The trio is also competing for spots on Canada’s squad that will face the U.S. in the upcoming three-game series.

The Under-22 three-game series is set for Aug. 16-19 at the Markin McPhail Centre in Calgary. Tickets are available online now and start at $10. The series games will be streamed live at HockeyTV.com as well.
