The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team traveled to Rochester Thursday night looking for its first win in its second game of the season.

After taking a lead early and despite playing the entire second half down one player, the Tigers managed to hold on for a victory over the Panthers, 1-0.

The only goal of the game came six minutes into the first period, when junior Turena Schultz headed one into the back of the net off a corner kick from sophomore Jacy Rosas.

The Tigers would receive a red card late in the first half, putting them at a one-player disadvantage for the rest of the game. However, some quick formation adjustments at halftime were enough to keep the Panthers from ever getting an equalizing goal.

Head coach Laura Wangen was proud of the way her team played through the adversity.

“Each and every player gave it their full effort,” she said. “Each and every player was focused and played with heart. (It was) a true team effort.”

The Tigers climb to .500 on the season at 1-1. They will be back on the pitch Tuesday when they host the Packers of Austin.
